Cavaliers claim a share of first place in MIAA A in advance of showdown with No. 1 Calvert Hall
No. 2 Archbishop Spalding baseball, with a date looming with No. 1 Calvert Hall on Tuesday afternoon, did not fall into the trap of looking ahead, Monday, as the Cavaliers took care of business with a 9-1 MIAA A Conference rout over visiting St. Paul’s.

The Cavs took control early, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings and then scored one run in each of the next three frames to build a 9-1 lead.

The Cavaliers ripped five doubles in the contest, with Nick Vermillion hitting two and Kris Burkowski, Nick Benitez and Matt Palumbo having one each. Vermillion, Burkowski and Peter Godrick had two RBI’s each and Nick Benitez had one. Vermillion and Burkowski also led the Cavs with two hits each.

St. Paul’s managed just three hits, as Spalding starter Cameron Webb pitched six innings, allowing two hits and one run (0 earned), while striking out seven. Timmy O’Farrell pitched a scoreless seventh for the Cavs.

Matt Davis got the Crusaders’ only RBI, while Bobby Cade Morhinweg had a hit and a run scored.

Spalding (10-2 overall) is now 7-1 in the MIAA A. They are tied with for first-place with Calvert Hall. St. Paul’s (1-9 overall) is now 1-7 in the league.
