Huskies seek to duplicate breakout 2016 campaign; Team Preview

While Bel Air went on to win a 4A state baseball championship in 2016, it was 1A Patterson Mll which ruled the roost in the talent rich UCBAC Chesapeake Division last spring.

Not only did the Huskies post a 21-4 record, including an 18 game winning streak, they defeated Bel Air twice to win the league title.

Patterson Mill and Bel Air will again due battle in 2017 and the Huskies have weapons to aim for a repeat. Fifteen players, including seven starters return for coach Matt Roseland, who is in his 10th year with a 115-54 record.

“It’s outstanding competition and helps to build our program come playoff time,” said Roseland of the UCBAC Chesapeake. “We look to compete for a regional championship and make a return to the final four. We understand the work it takes to get to this level and we hope to be right back there again this year, but we have to earn it from day one.”

Senior pitcher/shortstop Austin Koehn is the top returning Huskie. He went 10-1 last year with a 1.42 ERA in 69 innings, with 62 strikeouts. He earned 1st-Team All-Metro and 1st-Team All-Harford County honors, and has been named a Preseason All-State selection.

Junior outfielder Max Elliott, a 1st-Team All-Harford County pick, returns after batting .365 with 28 runs scored, 13 RBI, nine steals, five doubles and two triples.

Three 2nd-Team All-Harford County selections also return. Junior outfielder/third-baseman Thomas Kragh hit .357 with 18 runs scored, 11 RBI and six doubles. Junior second-baseman Nick Cress hit .329 with 24 hits, 26 RBI, five doubles and two triples. Senior catcher Eric Raley batted .316 with 20 RBI.

Senior right-hander Jake Sheesley also returns to bolster the pitching staff. He went 4-0 in 2016 with a 2.24 ERA in 62 innings and 52 strikeouts.
