Chesapeake-AA's Persell leads way in senior girls' all-star hoops match; Old Mill's Jenkins and AACS' Joseph shines in boys' game


marcel jenkinsAnne Arundel County's top senior basketball players were in action Wednesday evening at Meade for its 29th annual all-star match. The North gained undisputed bragging rights, claiming both matches.

In the lowest scoring girls' match since the inaugural game in 1989, the North won 49-44 over the South. Persell from Chesapeake-Anne Arundel and Old Mill's Brandi Hall each scored 10 points.

Persell, a 6-foot-2 post, was named the North's Most Valuable Player. Annapolis' Kayla Johnson, who led all scorers with 15 points, was the South's MVP.

Chesapeake-Anne Arundel coach Maria Gray guided the North team while Broadneck's Gail Davis headed up the South.

In the lowest scoring game since 1998, the North outlasted the South, 97-83, in the boys' match. Old Mill's Marcel Jenkins scored 16 points for North, and Jacoby Rojas (Northeast) and Dayvon Cuffey from Glen Burnie each finished with 13.

Jenkins, who helped Old Mill to the Anne Arundel County championship this past season, was selected North MVP. Annapolis Area Christian School's Brandon Joseph earned South MVP honors with 12 points. 

Broadneck's Damon Gomer had 16 points for South, who was coached by South River's Jeff Vincent. Chris Scraeder, who recently stepped down as North County's coach, guided the North.
