Goretti stuns DeMatha at the buzzer; No. 3 Mount St. Joe and Mount Carmel will meet for a fifth time

It was a banner opening round for the Baltimore Catholic League teams participating in the 57th annual Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament, Thursday at Frostburg State University.

BCL and MIAA A Conference champion Mount St. Joseph routed St. John’s (DC), 72-54, in its opener, St. Maria Goretti stunned defending champion DeMatha, 60-57, with a last-second three-pointer and fifth-ranked Mount Carmel won the evening’s final contest, 70-67, over Paul VI (VA).

In Friday’s semifinals, Goretti will face top-seeded Gonzaga, while St. Joe and Mount Carmel will meet for the fifth time this season. St. Joe has won all four previous encounters, including wins in the MIAA and BCL championship games, over the last two weekends.

Goretti’s Elijah Clarance had a legendary Alhambra performance, scoring 25 points and draining a game-winning three-pointer, with 0.8 seconds left, to help the Gaels vanquish DeMatha, which has won this tournament more than any other team.

Goretti (28-7) led for much of the first half, building its lead to as many as eight points, but DeMatha staged a 9-0 run in the third quarter and led by three entering the final quarter. The Gaels, however, did not fade away, exchanging leads and ties with the Stags all the way down to the final seconds of the fourth quarter.

In addition to Clarance’s 25 points, Amir Harris had 17 points, five rebounds and four assists for Goretti. DJ Harvey led DeMatha with 25 points.

Third-ranked St. Joe (36-3) overcame some recent first-round trouble at Alhambra (three 1-point first-round losses in its last three appearances) with its impressive win over St. John’s.

BCL Player of the Year Jalen Smith was dominant once again, scoring 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to earn a double-double. Running mate senior Darryl Morsell also posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard James Bishop scored 14 points.

The Gaels stormed in front early, building a lead of as many as 24 points in the first half.

Mount Carmel (28-10) started fast in its second ever Alhambra appearance, building a 14-point leads in both the second and third quarters, before Paul VI rallied to within four late in the fourth quarter.

A pair of free throws from Terry Nolan, Jr., with 10 seconds to play and strong three-point defense helped the Cougars close out the win. Nolan and Christian Evans each scored 16 points to lead Mount Carmel. Dwight Felton scored 13 and Brandon Watson netted 10 points, while Jordan Jones contributed 12 rebounds.
