River Hill tops Oakland Mills, clinch first league crown since 2002; Martin has 19

Jay Martin scored 19 points, and Luke Champion added 11 as River Hill High defeated Oakland Mills, 69-64, in a Howard County boys' basketball contest in Clarksville Wednesday.

The victory secures the league championship for the Hawks (16-6 overall, 10-1 Howard), who last finished atop the league standings in 2002. River Hill led 35-28 at halftime, but Oakland Mills, last season's HoCo champ, stormed back to take the lead in the fourth quarter.

River Hill recovered in the closing minutes, completing its regular season and locking up the top seed in the upcoming Class 3A East Region playoffs. The Hawks last reached the state final four in 2007 when they claimed the 3A title.

Daeshawn Eaton finished with a game-high 22 points for Oakland Mills (6-15, 3-7 Howard), and Jayelen Estep added 11. The Scorpions complete their regular season Friday at home against Marriotts Ridge.
