No. 17 Long Reach spoils Senior Day behind Williams (VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS HERE!!)
Howard High girls' basketball honored its seniors before its match against Long Reach. A couple of hours later, the Lightning were doing the celebrating.
No. 17 Long Reach defeated the third-ranked Lions, 54-47, in a Howard County contest in Ellicott City. Senior guard Kiana Williams scored 22 points for the Lightning (17-4 overall, 8-2 Howard) and Lyric Swann added 11.
The Columbia school maintained its composure in the final minutes, handing the Lions (19-1, 9-1 Howard) their first loss. The Lightning lost Howard, 49-35, last month. The game didn't count in the league standings.
Long Reach wasn't intimidated by the Lions' raucous Senior Day audience, jumping out to an early 11-5 advantage. Howard closed the quarter with a 13-6 run to acquire an 18-17 advantage.
The Lightning scored the first eight points in the second, claiming its biggest lead at 25-18, en route to a 26-21 halftime advantage. They built an eight-point cushion late in the fourth, courtesy of six of eight free throw shooting.
The Lions got no closer than four as the defending league champs' 24-game regular season winning streak was ended. Taylor Addison led Howard with 12 points.
The Lions will travel to Centennial Friday, needing to win a second straight HoCo crown. Long Reach plays at Atholton Friday, needing a win and a Howard loss to claim the county crown.
