Gaels have all 14 wrestlers in the semis, the Eagles have 12, St.Paul’s is in third with 8 semifinalists

Cornelius SchusterAfter the first round of the MIAA wrestling tournament at the Smith Center on the campus of Mt. St. Joe, the host school was tied for the lead with McDonogh. At the conclusion of the second round, St. Joe had taken an eight-point lead over McDonogh, 138-130. St. Paul’s sits in third place with 104 points.

St. Joe advanced all 14 of their grapplers to the semi-finals, and five of them will square off with opponents from McDonogh. Seth Fillers (138) meets the Eagles’ Grant Gorvett, at 145 Chris Roybal faces Quinn Devaney, David Schultz (182) squares off with Jack Wimmer, Keagan Rill (220) will see his rival Parker Robinson, and Paul Warner will look up at the monstrous PJ Mustipher staring him down.

Schultz and Wimmer will be meeting for the third time this season. Schultz won the first in their annual MIAA dual meet. Wimmer won the next meeting at FloWrestling’s Who’s #1. Rill and Robinson are also seeing each other for the third time this year. Robinson won the first match, and Rill won the second.

Other Gaels to reach the semi-finals are, Chris Barnabae (106), Connor Strong (113), Matthew Jun (120), Nathan Porter (126), Shawn Orem (132), Zach Phillips (152), Justin Henry (170), and Austin Stith (195). Porter and Henry will be involved in rematches with grapplers that beat them during the dual meet season. Porter gets Spalding’s Rick Couch, and Henry faces Gilman’s Jeremy Cranston.

Sean Scott (113), Ryan Leventhal (120), Ray Kable (126), Caden Mareno (132), Alex LaVeck (152), Dominic Solis (160), and Garrett Kappes (170) are also in the semis for McDonogh. Cody Williams (195) is still alive in the consolation bracket.

St. Paul’s is a dangerous third place team, as six of their eight semi-finalists are No. 1 seeds, and thus, predicted to win their weight classes. Those top seeds are, Kurt McHenry (106), Imran Heard (138), Dale Tiongson (170), Jack Parr (182), Noah Kalishman (195), and John Urban (220). Will Guida (113) and Dylan Blau (145) are the other Crusaders’ to reach the semi-finals.

There were not many upsets during the day one action, but a few notable results occured. At 113 Spalding’s Dean Laumann pinned the top seed, Mt. Carmel’s Tyler Trout. Laumann is unranked by the Maryland State Wrestling Association, while Trout is No. 11.

Freshman Josh Aybar (Loyola, No.20) edged No. 8 Nick Dintino (St. Paul’s), 5-4, at 132lbs. Another unranked grappler, Severn’s Jonathan Jarosz (195), pinned Curley’s No. 8 Tyrone Roper.
