Pointers exact revenge on Dunbar in semis, then down county rival Hereford in final

Sparrows Point

Sparrows Point hosted the 1A/2A North region dual championships on Wednesday night. Last year, they were forced to watch Dunbar celebrate a championship in their gym. There would be no such repeat for the Poets as the Point defeated them 51-24 in the semifinals.

Hereford reversed an early season loss to Owings Mills in the other semi-final, walking away with a 32-31 win. This set up another rematch from earlier this season. Hereford traveled to Sparrows Point in early January and was handed a 55-10 whipping. This meeting didn’t go much better, as the Point again achieved domination, notching a 57-12 win. In this match, the Bulls were able to win three matches, compared to two in the first meeting.

“It was a tremendous atmosphere in our gym,” said Sparrows Point coach Mike Whisner. “The wrestlers were very excited to try to get their revenge on Dunbar after last year. I think the feeling after regional duals last year stayed with the team. Nobody enjoys watching another team celebrate in their own gym. They fueled us all season.

“The team wrestled well. The crowd was great. We are excited to get back to the state duals. We got hammered by Oakland Mills two years ago, but were able to beat them earlier this year (at the Scorpion Duals). (It) should be interesting.”

The match started out promising for Hereford when 220lber Troy Gladney earned a technical fall against Josh Hux, 21-6. In the earlier match, Hux defeated Gladney, 10-8.

The good news ended there for Bulls, as the Pointers won the next four bouts, all by pin, to take a 24-5 lead they would not relinquish. Picking up falls during that stretch were, Justin Rallo (285), Matthew Fouts (106), Danny Davis (113), and Mike Fouts (120).

Hereford’s Jimmy Cavin, No. 16 at 120lbs, moved up to 126, and picked up a major-decision over Skyler Minutelli, 14-2. The score was now, 24-9, in favor of the Point.

They padded that lead with wins at 132 and 138 to make the score, 33-9. At 132, Max Hammond, who recently dropped from 138lbs (where is ranked 10th by the MSWA), pinned Cade Hudson. Ethan Hoenig edged Ryan Godrey, 5-4.

No.21 Jimmy Kells (145) scored the Bulls’ final points with a 16-11 decision of Cortavious Carter. Carter pinned Kells in their January meeting.

Hereford was still alive when Ronnie Brown stepped on the mat for the Point at 152lbs. But Brown began what would be a five-match win streak to close the dual meet and snuff out the Bulls’ title hopes. Brown beat Cale McMurdy, 5-0.

Quentin Hager (160), Drew Gorsuch (182), and No.1 Ethan Smith (195) registered pins for Sparrows Point. Giovanni Herring (170) added a decision of CJ Wartman to the tally. Smith’s fall pushed the final score to 57-12.

If Dunbar brought a full squad to compete, the start of their match with Sparrows Point could have spelled trouble for the Pointers, as they found themselves trailing the Poets 15-6 after four matches.

Skyler Drzewecki got the Point started with a pin at 220. Dunbar’s No. 3 Jorden Pryor received a forfeit at 220lbs, followed by No. 14 William Smith’s fall at heavyweight. At 106, Will Lomax (No. 24 at 113) downed Matthew Fouts, 8-5.

At this time, Sparrows Point received forfeits for Davis (113), Mike Fouts (120), Minutelli (126), and Hammond (132). Those added to Hoenig’s overtime win over No. 24 De’Airus Carr at 138 and Carter’s pin at 145 put the Point out-front, 39-15. Carter’s points secured the victory for the home team.

No.25 Avery Thurman (152) and No. 16 Jemar Cannon (160), with a decision and pin respectively, were the last victors for Dunbar. Their wins made the score 39-24.

Herring (170) and Smith (182), who is ranked 5th in the nation by FloWrestling, added pins in their matches. Smith’s was a second period fall against No.12 Dwayne Johnson.

Hereford’s match with Owings Mills was a back and forth affair with each team winning seven bouts. Hereford went up 10-0 with a major-decision by Walter (195) and a pin by Gladney (220). The Eagles came right back and took the lead, 12-10, on a pair of falls by No. 21 Andrew Bikay (285) and Alex Dufour (106).

The Bulls won the next three, with a major-decision by Wickiser (113) and pins by Justin Snare (120) and Cavin (126). This put Hereford back in the lead, 26-12.

No.11 Tyson McDuffy (132) picked up a decision over Hudson, 8-6, to pull the Eagles within, eleven, 26-15. The Bulls added six more points with wins at 138 (Godfrey) and 145 (Ian Bennett). Unbeknownst to Hereford, those points which made the score 32-15, would be their last.

The Bulls held on as Owings Mills won the last four matches, only to fall short by one, 32-31. No. 3 David Hollingsworth pinned Kells at 152. Roell Ngounou (160) scored a major-decision and Diondre Space (170) beat Naylor.

With the score 32-28 the Eagles needed a major-decision to tie, or better, for the win. Earl Little (182) was only able to pick up a regular decision, 9-4, over Zaruba.
