No. 1 John Carroll remains undefeated with a 4-1 win over McDonogh; Curley, Loyola, Calvert Hall and Gilman also win in the MIAA A


Top-ranked John Carroll managed only five hits, but the Patriots took advantage of three McDonogh errors to remain unbeaten with a 4-1 over the visiting Eagles, in MIAA A Conference baseball Friday.

Ninth-place hitter Matt Rodriguez was the only Patriots with two hits and he scored a run and drove in one. Tyler Blittersdorf and Nico Santoro also knocked in runs for John Carroll.

On the mound, Hunter Tipton scattered six hits over 4.1 inning to earn the win. Ben Pika backed him up with 2.2 innings of 1-hit relief, as he struck out two and walked none.

For the Eagles, Ben Smith went 2-for-2 with a double and added two walks. Reid Quinn and Jack Kinney also doubled for McDonogh.

John Carroll is now 12-0 overall and 8-0 in the A Conference where it continues to lead the league. McDonogh (8-8 overall) fell to 1-7 on the A Conference.

Elsewhere in the A Conference on Friday, Tyler Locklear went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI’s to lead third-ranked Archbishop Curley to a 12-2 home win over St. Mary’s. Jalen March, Trent Gast-Woodard and Nick Brown all had two RBI’s for the Friars.

At Blakefield, No. 14 Loyola got a walk-off RBI single from Jake Schouten in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Mount St. Joseph, 6-5. The Dons trailed 4-1 after four innings, but scored four times in the fifth, aided by a pair of St. Joe errors, a sac fly by AJ Holcomb and an RBI single by Jack Reinhardt.

Under the lights at Calvert Hall, the 10th-ranked Cardinals remained hot with a 5-1 win over No. 2 Archbishop Spalding. Catcher Parker Landwehr went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Antonio Barranca had two-run double. Dominic Freeburger, J.P. Murphy and Jose Torres also doubled for the Cardinals.

Also on Friday, Gilman defeated St. Paul’s, 10-6.
