Mount St Joseph wins team championship with four individual titles and 12 place winners, Glenelg finishes fourth

The team scores at the top of the standings after wrestling ended on Friday at Stephen Decatur High School showed a tight race. Mount St. Joseph (No.1 in BillyB’s Wrestling World’s latest Maryland rankings) was only holding a 9.5-point lead over No. 4 Damascus (147-137.5). However, by the time the semifinals ended on Saturday afternoon the Gaels’ lead grew to 67.5 points and they would end up winning the tournament title by 44.5-points, 269-224.5, over the second-place Swarmin’ Hornets from Montgomery County.

“Every year we look forward to coming to the War on the Shore tournament and challenge some of tougher teams that we normally will not compete against during the regular season,” said St. Joe coach Harry Barnabae. “Damascus, Ceasar Rodney, Freedom always have very competitive wrestling teams, and this year was no different.

“I felt that our team had one of their better performances this season. Especially from Clement Woods, Nathan Porter, and Jonathan Short. All three wrestled back to finish third. Austin Stith is wrestling with a great deal of confidence and came away with two big wins over, Gabe McAndrew (Bethesda Chevy Chase), and of course, his fall over Paul Purkey, which earned Austin the Outstanding Wrestler nod.”

St. Joe’s four champions were the most of any squad. At 113, No. 2 Chris Barnabae tore through the tournament pinning all five of his opponents. His first period fall in the finals over No. 5 Patrick Hugues (James M. Bennett) was the third first frame fall in the tournament for Barnabae.

“I believe I had a slow start on the first day, but I stepped it up on the second day of the tournament and made sure I gave it my best,” Barnabae said. “Our goal as a team was to win the War on the Shore tournament. We knew that every bonus point counted.”

Connor Strong (132) overcame an early 2-0 deficit, shutting down top-seeded Rashad Stratton (Sussex Central) the rest of the way to register a 14-2 major-decision. Strong (No. 7 in Maryland) was seeded third. In the semifinals he pinned the second seed, No. 6 Jared Thomas (Glenelg).

“I️ was really excited to get another opportunity to wrestle in this tournament,” Strong added. “Last year, I️ had to injury default my first match due to my shoulder injury. I️ try not to think about seeding, because it is just a number. It doesn’t matter what your seeded, you just wrestle. In the semifinals, I️ was losing 4-1 after giving up two takedowns. I️ trusted in my conditioning and was able to pick up a few more takedowns before getting the pinfall.

“I️ also gave up the first takedown in the finals, but got an escape as time expired. He chose down, and I️ saw this as an opportunity to score some points. My coaches have really helped me develop my top game, and it helped me tremendously in the finals, as I️ was able to pick up 12 points in near-fall in the second and third period. All our coaches really prepared us for this tournament to make sure we were as ready as possible to preform our best.”

No. 1 Justin Henry, who was nursing a knee ailment, edged Glenelg’s Max Sotka (No. 8), 3-2, in the finals.

The 195lbs class featured No. 1 in the state versus No. 2, as Damascus’ Paul Purkey (No. 1) faced St. Joe’s Stith. The match was close until the end of the second period when Stith exploded for a takedown to the back and picked up the pin with three seconds left. Purkey is probably having nightmares about the purple of St. Joe. Last year in these same finals, David Schultz dropped Purkey in their matchup.

“I felt good going into the tournament,” remarked Stith. “I was really confident, and I felt that I was prepared to wrestle the number one guy in the state. There was never a doubt in my mind that I could win the War on the Shore a second go-round (Stith also won the tournament last year).”

Reaching the finals but not the top of the podium for the Gaels were Seth Fillers (138), Schultz (182), Keagan Rill (220) and Isaac Righter (285). Woods (120), Porter (126), and Short (160) were third. Chris Roybal (145) placed seventh.

Damascus was only able to crown one champion out of their three finalists. Ryan Lawrence (No. 1 at 152) dropped to 145 and secured the title with a fall at the 1:04 mark of the first period over Kyle McDonough (Sanford, DE). Placing second were Johnny McLaughlin (126) and Purkey.

Finishing third for the Swarmin’ Hornets were John Allan Furgeson (152) and Elijah Baisden (285). Josh Creegan (138) and Ben Lokos (170) were fourth. Timothy Furgeson was fifth at 170, Aiden Beall landed in the sixth spot at 220, Michael Emerick was seventh at 106 and Dyllan Ramirez placed eighth at 132.

No. 5 Glenelg’s 143.5 points was good for a fourth-place finish. The Gladiators had two grapplers in the finals but Jacob Jones (160, No. 6) was the only one able to secure a title. Max Sotka fell short at 170.

“I felt good with the way I wrestled,” said Jones. “I liked being able to wrestle kids we don’t usually wrestle, and it showed me what I need to work on in getting ready for the post season.”

Robbie Baxter was fourth for Glenelg at 220. Jared Thomas (132), Ian Gwin (138), and Drew Sotka (152) all placed fifth. Logan Gwin (113, 6th) and Kevin Hansberger (120, 7th) round out the Gladiators’ placers.

Dunbar’s No.1 Jorden Pryor (285) squared off with Mount St. Joe’s No. 2 Isaac Righter in his championship bout. Pryor was dominating and working with a lead when Righter was disqualified for unnecessary roughness.

“The tournament was good,” said Pryor. “I enjoyed coming in first. I had a rough finals match. I was the number one ranked kid in Maryland and he was number two, so we went at it. I know pressure breaks pipes, so I got an early lead to put the pressure on him.”

The Poets had two other grapplers place, Dwayne Johnson (182, No. 6) was fourth, and Cameron Deville (113) was fifth. Deville, who came in unranked, had a coming out party. While he didn’t win the championship, he did turn some heads by defeating No. 8 Logan Gwin in the fifth-place bout, 4-2 in overtime. Earlier in the consolation round, Deville beat No. 15 Conor Lozupone (Good Counsel), 7-0.

“I knew I had what it takes to beat two ranked people, but I just had to put my mind to it,” Deville said. “During both of the matches, I kept thinking to myself, “I got this”, but in order for me to win I couldn’t give up and had to keep working. I was proud of myself. I waited a long time just to have the chance to get ranked, but it was just a matter of time.”

The host school crowned one champion at 220lbs. No. 7 Caleb Bourne controlled his match with No. 2 Rill from the opening whistle and would go on to pick up a fall in the middle of the second period, 3:06. Maryland’s only other champion was No. 2 King Sandoval (120, St. Mary’s Ryken).

Archbishop Curley had two wrestlers win awards, Josh Laubach was second at 152 and Kennell Washington placed eighth at 126.

Delaware’s Caesar Rodney had two champions, Cameron Hayes (126) and Jackson Dean (138). Sanford High of Delaware had a champ in Andrew Brooks (152).
Brennan McBride (Coatsville, PA) was the 106lb titlist and Tyler Matheny (Lake Braddock, VA) secured the 182lb crown.
