Falcons rally past No. 6 Perry Hall for Patterson tourney hoops crown; Rimel scores 18

Gerstell Academy boys’ basketball team believes its tough non-league schedule has prepared it for MIAA B Conference competition. The Falcons got a ginormous boost of confidence Thursday.

Gerstell defeated No. 6 Perry Hall, 61-52, in the final of the Bud Eckert Classic at Patterson. Senior Colin Rimel scored 18 points and Anthony Carpenter added 12.

The Carroll County school outscored the defending Class 4A state champ Gators, 20-4, in the fourth quarter to claim the holiday tournament crown. The Falcons defeated Hammond in the opening round Wednesday.

Gerstell (4-8 overall) had two wins coming into the event.

“It’s a great win. When you take on a talented like Perry Hall you have to play near perfect,” said Falcons coach Ben Thompson. “We’ve played a brutal schedule and it prepared us for this.”

The Finksburg school played six MIAA A squads including No. 2 St. Frances Academy and Mount Carmel, which reached the MIAA A and Baltimore Catholic League final last season. Gerstell had wins over Gilman School and B league rival Chapelgate Christian Academy entering the week.

Down 48-41 going into the fourth quarter Thursday, the Falcons held Perry Hall (2-3), arguably the most talented public team in the region, to a field goal. Rimel (five 3-pointers in the game) scored seven points in the final frame while Carpenter went 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

“I told them we were OK. We had play them close and gave ourselves a chance,” said Thompson. “We locked into them defensively and emphasized switching defenses during the game. We bothered them a little bit.”

Senior Tyler Holley led Perry Hall with 14 points and Terence Johnson finished with 10. The Gators’ frontline, featuring 6-foot-8 Laquill Hardnett, University of Mississippi commit Anthony Higgs and 6-7 junior Anthony Walker, combined for 21 points.

The Falcons (1-1 in MIAA B play) begin a full-run of MIAA B competition Wednesday at St. Mary’s. Gerstell lost to eventual champ St. Paul’s School in the league semifinals last season.

Host Patterson (3-2) claimed 3rd place with a 64-49 victory over Hammond (3-4). Zach Blackwell had 20 points and eight steals and junior guard Gerard Mungo added 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
