The Damascus wrestling team already held the record for most consecutive dual meet state championships, with four, going into Saturday’s action at North Point High School in Waldorf. Damascus (No.4 per the Maryland State Wrestling Association) added one more year to the count as they pushed the win streak to five years with a 47-18 victory over No.10 Glenelg in the finals.

“Yesterday was very surreal to be able to stand there at the end of the day and see what the kids and this team has accomplished,” Damascus coach John Furgeson continued. “Our leaders have stepped it up and carried the torch for our program. They have done it with hard work and togetherness. Our lineup has been a tough one to crack and each member has picked up the team at one point or another. It is so exciting to see young men compete at a high level and succeed through hard work and togetherness.

“These young men are part of something bigger than themselves and it is a blessing to be a part of it. Our coaches have worked hard at putting together a great game plan and keep the team focused on the goals at hand. The teams that we have faced have made us better each step of the way. Coach Slick and Coach Bichner are tremendous coaches, but are better people. They have done a great job with their programs and we saw some great wrestling because of their leadership. We were able to win this weekend and it made us better. It was a great evening for us, but we look to finish the season strong.”

Glenelg held an early lead. After winning three of the first four matches they were ahead 15-6. Max Sotka (160) won a decision over Timothy Furgeson. Garrett Murray (170) and Sam Alsheimer (195) picked up falls for the Gladiators.

Paul Purkey (182) put six on the board for Damascus during the opening slate of matches. After Alsheimer’s win the Swarmin’ Hornets went on a five-match win streak to take the lead. Elijah Baisden (220) received a forfeit, while Michael Bradshaw (285) and John McLaughlin (120) picked up falls.

No.23 Silas Patton (106) added a mild upset to Damascus’ run with a 7-4 win over No.15 Kevin Hansberger.

Jared Thomas (126) downed Dyllan Ramirez, 10-5, at 126 for the last of Glenelg’s scoring. With the score sitting at 30-18, the Gladiators were still alive, but the Swarmin’ Hornets would snuff out their hopes with a string of four consecutive wins to close out the dual. When Collin Gallagher decisioned Drew Sotka, 3-2, at 138lbs, the celebration could commence, as that win clinched the title for Damascus.

No.3 Ryan Lawrence (145) pinned No.15 Dylan Istre in the first period and John Allan Furgeson (No.10 at 160) beat No.17 Jacob Jones at 152 to end the match on a high note.

The Swarmin’ Hornets’ semi-final meeting with No.6 North Hagerstown was a highly-anticipated rematch from earlier this season when Damascus beat North, 38-33, at the Warrior Duals. That result gave the Hubs hope that they could be the ones to put an end to the Swarmin Hornets’ win streak. But, alas, that did not happen, as Damascus cruised to a 49-17 win.

North had to sense it just wasn’t their day, when, in the second match, Kaleb Corbin was disqualified for allegedly biting Timothy Furgeson in their 160lb bout. Corbin was holding a 5-2 lead at the time of the call.

Despite that outcome, North charged ahead picking up wins at 170 (Ryan Montes) and 182 (Aaron Brooks) to draw within one, 10-9. Damascus won the next three matches to go up, 23-9. No.18 Tyler Cook pinned Patton to draw the Hubs a little closer, 23-15.

The Swarmin’ Hornets went on another three-match tear to put the dual meet away, 34-15. Ramirez’s pin at 126 over Joseph Gross sealed the win for Damascus.

Two-time state champ Brian Stuart picked up a technical fall at 132 for the last of North’s points. Scott Obendorfer (138) and Lawrence (145) registered falls in the last two matches to make the final score 49-17.

Glenelg survived a nail-biter over No.15 Leonardtown in the other semi-final, winning 30-25. No.7 John Podsednik (152) decisioned Jones, 6-3, to open the dual. Glenelg won three straight, all by decision, to take the lead, 9-3. Sotka (160), Murray (170), and Josh Arnone (182) were the victors for the Gladiators.

The Raiders stormed back, though, taking the next five matches, and therefore, a 22-9 lead. No.12 Alexander Green (195) won by major-decision over Alsheimer (No.13 at 182), 14-6. Alex Woodburn received a forfeit at 220, while Robert Kelly (285), Sean Vosburgh (106) and Parker McDowell (113) won by decision. Vosburgh (No.16 by the MSWA) tallied a mild upset of Hansberger, 7-2.

The Gladiators scored on a decision at 120 and a pin at 126 to pull within four, 22-18. Jonathan Shin’s 7-2 win over Logan Gwin pushed Leonardtown’s lead to, 25-18 with two matches remaining.

Glenelg would need to win both matches, with bonus points in one of them, to advance to the finals. At 138lbs, Drew Sotka answered the bell with a pin to set up a winner-take-all final match. Istre came through with a second period fall over No.19 Ben Cianco to make the final score 30-25.
