Breakdown of Bobcats’ 2017 schedule
With the start of practice for the 2017 high school football season approaching, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
Bel Air Bobcats
2016 record: 8-3 (Class 4A North Region semifinalist/UCBAC Chesapeake tri-champion)
2016 review: The Bobcats reached the state postseason for the third straight season and shared the UCBAC Chesapeake crown with Havre de Grace and North Harford. The Harford County school is scheduled to return 25 letterwinners including all-Harford picks Devin Anderson (defensive back) and linemen Cameron DeJohn.
2017 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2016): 62-47 (.569)
Toughest 2017 opponent: Charles H. Flowers. The Jaguars reached the 4A South Region playoffs last season and compete in the Prince George’s County 4A league, arguably the toughest public league in the state. Sulton Woolbright (defensive back), Tiziam Muhammad (defensive end) and Mekhi Williams (defensive back) should be key returners.
Most intriguing 2017 opponent: Elkton. The Elks won the UCBAC Susquehanna title and reached the 2A state title match last fall. The Cecil County school returns one of the region’s top running backs in senior Raiquon Estep.
By a number: 27. Victories the last three seasons for Bel Air, tied for most in the UCBAC with Havre de Grace.
