Undefeated John Carroll continues to hold No. 1; Severna Park climbs to No. 5; Catonsville debuts at No. 20

by Pat O’Malley

While top ranked John Carroll continues on its unbeaten tear as the MIAA A Conference leader, and Archbishop Curley and Archbishop Spalding keep on the heels of the Patriots, there is a familiar somewhat forgotten team creeping up on the trio.

Yes, here comes those Calvert Hall Cardinals – 100 mph!!

Those now No. 7 ranked Redbirds have reeled off seven in a row and eight of their last nine to soar from 2-4 overall to 10-5. Their MIAA A Conference record stands at 5-3 – one loss behind both No. 2 Curley (14-3, 7-2) and No. 3 Spalding (11-4, 5-2). A perennial contender for the A Conference title and the area’s No. 1 ranking, the Hall is suddenly once again a factor just when some thought they were toast.

John Carroll remains the A Conference front runner at 9-0 in league play and 13-0 overall.

As for the rest of the VSN Baseball Top 20, a pair of Anne Arundel County teams took big hits as Chesapeake tumbled from No. 4 last week, after being No. 1 for two weeks, to No. 10, and No. 20 Old Mill (7-4) fell out. After dealing No. 19 North County (7-2) its first loss of the season by 9-2, Chesapeake lost two in succession for the first time in nearly 3 years.

Old Mill was replaced by Catonsville at No. 20. The Comets ran their overall record to 5-2 by winning two out of three games, losing only a tough decision by 5-4 to No. 12 Dulaney (6-1).

A few big games this week that could continue this “nothing guaranteed season” has No. 3 Spalding traveling to No. 1 John Carroll on Thursday; Howard County rivals, No. 6 Howard (9-2) and No. 15 River Hill (6-2) meeting Wednesday at Howard, plus the latter visiting No. 17 Mount Hebron (5-2) today and the Hawks of River Hill hosting No. 8 Marriotts Ridge (8-1) on Friday.

Those four Howard County teams along with No. 16 Reservoir (6-3) are vying for their league title with the standings showing Howard and Marriotts Ridge tied for first at 7-1 each with River Hill third at 7-2 followed by 6-2 teams Mount Hebron and Reservoir.

In the UCBAC, the Chesapeake Division is the toughest with ranked teams: No. 4 Patterson Mill (7-1), No. 15 Bel Air (4-1) and No. 20 Rising Sun (7-0). The latter leads at 6-0 in league play, but faces a loaded week with Patterson Mill and Bel Air, each at 4-1, on the slate.

The undefeated Tigers have an away and home set with Bel Air’s Bobcats set for today and tomorrow and Rising Sun will travel to Patterson Mill on Wednesday. The latter Huskies suffered their only loss this season by 3-0 to the Tigers back on March 26.
