Javit knocks in five runs for the Vikings; Severn, Boys’ Latin, Glenelg Country and Pallotti also win on opening day in the B Conference
After dominating the MIAA C Conference for the last several seasons, the St. John’s Catholic Prep baseball teams has made the leap to the B Conference in 2018 and the Vikings made it a successful debut, Monday, routing visiting Friends, 13-1, at McCurdy Field in Frederick.
St. John’s collected nine hits in the victory with AJ Javitt stroking two of them and knocking in a team-high five runs. Both hits were of the extra-base variety as Javitt had a triple in the Vikings’ eight-run third and he hit home run in the fifth inning.
Tiarnan McCormick had a team-best three hits for the Vikings.
Andres Enriquez was the winning the pitcher as he made the start, threw 4.1 innings and struck out 10, while allowing just one hit and one run. He was backed by flawless defense as the Vikings did not make an error and Seth McRoberts handled 11 chances without a miscue.
Also on opening day in the B Conference, Severn routed Gerstell Academy, another team making its B Conference debut, 18-1, two-time defending champion Boys’ Latin edged Annapolis Area Christian, 5-4, Glenelg Country thumped Park School, 12-2, in five innings, and St. Vincent Pallotti handled visiting Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 7-2.
Jimmy Riley led the way for Severn with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Ryan Jack had a double, three RBI and two runs scored. In addition, Everett Cortes and Jordan Mathis each added two runs and two RBI and and Alex Rozner had a double, drove in four and scored a pair.
In it's victory, Boys' Latin scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to erase a 4-1 deficit. Jackson Gazin had two hits, including a double, and three RBI, while Cole Jarrett went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Gazin, Jarrett and Sam Grace all doubled for the Lakers. After BL took the lead, Grace pitched the final three innings, all scoreless to nail down the victory. Ned Ruffin tossed the first four innings, striking out eight and earning the win.
Glenelg Country collected seven hits in its victory at Park, but the Dragons amplified their offensive opportunities by drawing 10 walks from Bruin pitchers and 19 stolen bases in the 12-2 victory. Tyler Russo led the way for the Dragons with two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored. Also, Michael Diangelo and Michael Fagan each contributed two RBI.
