Bryn Mawr School’s Natalie Maranto wears No. 1 on the basketball court. So, it was fitting that Maranto accounted for the first and final points in a historic win for the Mawrtians Sunday.

Bryn Mawr defeated Oldfields School, 32-24, for the IAAM C Conference championship at Stevenson University. It's the first IAAM crown for the Roland Park school.

“We are a team right from the start, and we have worked really hard to became of that both on the court and off it, Bryn Mawr coach Mimi Walters said. “Everyone just had fun in practice and in the games and it means a lot that we are able to be champions.”

Bryn Mawr (14-5 overall) which ended Indian Creek School's reign in Thursday's semifinal round, moved from the B into the C last season. After splitting with Oldfields during the regular season, the Mawrtians led wire-to-wire Sunday.

“Our team is very athletic and I think we just build off of that all season long,” Maranto said, who has played on varsity since her freshman year. “We worked on creating plays and found out what works best.”

Leading 14-10 at halftime, Bryn Mawr started to work the ball into the high post to junior Virginia Oursler, who scored four of her team-high nine points in the third quarter.

“We were struggling with our offense, our defense was playing well, but we were holding on to the ball for too long," Walters said. “So during halftime we talked about ball movement, we need to relax, move the ball and get the ball into the high post and having the post player flash and we were able to see a couple of mismatches.”

Bryn Mawr pulled away in the fourth with jumpers and backdoor layups from Oursler and Abbey Hurlbrink. Oursler recorded the final score with layup, via a Maranto assist.

Morgan Gause finished with a game-high 14 points for Oldfields (12-4). Oldfields defeated the Mawrtians, 37-32, last month at home after an overtime loss to Bryn Mawr in the season's opener.

“They played a great game from beginning to the end, we just couldn’t get things going,” Oldfields coach Stephanie Hill said. “I am proud of well the girls played all season.”

Maranto, a three-sport athlete, finished with six points and two assists. It was a perfect ending for seniors Maranto, Hannah Lopez and Maia Faraone.

“We just wanted to send our seniors out with a championship, something to go to college and something that they will remember forever,” Oursler said. “It was a full team effort today.”

“I am just really happy and really excited for a lot of teammates, I couldn’t have done this without them,” Maranto said.
