Top-seeded Mount de Sales also wins to setup championship showdown
Two teams many believe are ahead of schedule have been at the top of the IAAM A Conference volleyball heap all season and now No. 1 seed Mount de Sales Academy and No. 2 St. Paul’s School will battle for the league crown on Saturday night at Roland Park Country School (7 p.m.).
In Thursday’s semifinals, both squads swept their way through in impressive fashion.
St. Paul’s took down visiting Archbishop Spalding 25-16, 25-23, 25-23, in three extremely close sets. Monet Peoples, a 6-foot powerhouse who will play at Ithaca College next year, led the way with 20 kills and 9 digs.
Morgan Hill helped setup many of Peoples strikes as she produced 34 assists and Sarah Boyce was also strong with five digs.
Jacey Lewis had 9 kills to lead Spalding, while Alyssa Gunter and Taryn Crone combined for 14 assists and Caitlin Iley had 11 digs.
Mount de Sales sailed past Notre Dame Prep in the other semifinal, scoring a 25-12, 25-15, 25-18 victory.
Freshman outside hitter Mary Grace Goyena led the way with 12 Kills and was 16-for-16 serving with four aces. Another freshman, middle blocker Chidinma Onukwugha, added seven kills with two aces and three blocks.
Senior setter Camille Kreisel paced Mount de Sales with 21 assists while junior Malina Beideman topped the Sailors with eight digs.
