Saints four-peat as MIAA B swim champs; Jimmy Rayburn and Randolph claim three first-place medals (VIDEO HERE!!)

2017-18 MIAA B Conference Swimming Champions - St. Mary's Saints

by Nelson Coffin

Having never lost a meet of any kind in four years, the St. Mary’s High School swim team finished the 2017-18 campaign on a level that none of its eight MIAA B Conference rivals could match in the championships on Thursday night at Calvert Hall College High School in Towson.
The Saints blew away the field, distancing runner-up Severn School, 409.50-283, with their superior depth and speed.
Sts. Peter and Paul (239), St. Vincent Pallotti (220), Key School (176.50), Archbishop Curley (167). Beth Tfiloh (158), Annapolis Area Christian School (131) and John Carroll (127) were also victims of the St. Mary’s tsunami.
“I got everything I wanted out of theses kids,” St. Mary’s coach Allyson Reiter said. “They never disappointed me and they never let me down.”
The Saints began with a more than seven-second win in the 200-yard medley relay behind Patrick Hayburn (backstroke), Geoffrey Forsyth (breaststroke), Jimmy Hayburn (butterfly) and Cole Randolph (freestyle) over Sts. Peter and Paul’s foursome of Connor LeMIre, Tyler Christianson, Dylan Christoperson and Paul Dyer and never were seriously threatened thereafter.
Individual titles went to Randolph (100 and 200 freestyles), Jimmy Hayburn (50 free, 100 back) and Patrick Hayburn (500 free) in addition to a victory in the 400 free relay for the Saints.
“We went 35-0 in dual meets during my four years here,” said Jimmy Hayburn, who will follow his sister, Annie, to swim for Loyola University Maryland. “And everybody contribute. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I have been really blessed, and I try to use my ability as best I can.”
Jimmy Hayburn said he was nervous the whole time watching his freshman brother edge Key’s Brendan Cline by a half-second in the 500 free.
“It came down to the last 12 yards,” he said. “It was special.”
The win for the younger Hayburn was a bit of a revenge race for bowing to the Obezag standout in the 100 fly by less than a second.
Christianson had a much wider gap — almost six seconds — while beating Forsyth in the 100 breaststroke and was just as dominant in beating Connor Drucis of St. Mary’s in the 200 individual medley.
Moreover, he led Sts. Peter and Paul to a triumph in the 200 free relay with the same group he teamed with in the 200 medley relay.
Forsyth, though, took his individual setback in stride because the Saints won again.
“It all comes from the team aspect,” said Forsyth, who hopes to attend the Naval Academy. “That’s what makes this work. I never had a clue that when I started swimming here that we would go on to win four championships. I look at the people who don’t swim year round, and they do phenomenal in the meets because they put in the work.”
