Friars pick up a critical win in the chase for the post-season

In an important MIAA B Conference basketball encounter, with playoff implications, host Archbishop Curley, separated from visiting Chapelgate Christian, in the third quarter, and pulled away for a 72-62 win over the Yellow Jackets, Monday at Curley.

Curley and Chapelgate are part of four-team block chasing what appears to be the final two playoff seeds in the B Conference. With the win, Curley (9-9 overall, 4-5 MIAA B) moved to the top of that group, while Chapelgate (12-11 overall, 3-7 MIAA B) slid to the bottom. St. John’s Catholic Prep (4-7) and St. Mary’s (3-6) are also in this battle. League leaders Indian Creek (10-1) and Gerstell Academy (8-1) are locks for the post-season, while third-place Severn (6-3) and fourth-place St. Paul’s (6-4) are both in commanding position.

Chapelgate built a 35-31 halftime lead over the Friars, but Curley outscored the Yellow Jackets 22-9 in the this quarter to take the lead.

Junior Travis Dobbins poured in a game-high 24 points and the Friars got 12 points from senior James Price, as well as 10 from freshman Dinari Boykin. In addition, seniors Brandon Knapp and Brendan Medley-Bacon combined for 17 points.
