Bel Air, Glenelg, Owings Mills, Perryville, and Sparrows Point are No.1 seeds in their regions, will host duals

The 2017-2018 wrestling season marks the first year under the new four-class dual state tournament format. Each classification (1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A) will have their own dual meet state champion. In years past, the 2A and 1A would be grouped together as were 4A and 3A.

The individual state tournament will still use the two-class format (2A/1A and 4A/3A), but there will no longer be team scoring at the tournament.

Weather permitting, all regional dual meet championships are scheduled for this Wednesday, with the semifinals slated for 5:30pm, followed by the finals at 7:30pm.

In the 1A division, Baltimore County dominates the north with the top-seeded host Sparrows Point facing No. 4 Loch Raven in one semifinal. No. 2 Dunbar squares of with the three seed, Pikesville. Fans are hoping for a Sparrows Point/Dunbar showdown in the finals, as the sparks typically fly when these two programs meet.

Perryville is the No. 1 seed in the 1A East and will host UCBAC rival Havre de Grace in the first round. Two other UCBAC teams fill out the east as Patterson Mill secured the second seed and meets Bohemia Manor.
The 2A North is also dominated by Baltimore County schools with three teams in the field. The host, and top-seed Owings Mills will see Gwynn Park (Prince George’s County) in the opener, while Eastern Tech (3rd seed) renews its rivalry with No.2 Hereford.

Glenelg is the top dog in the 2A South, which is made up of three schools from Howard County. The Gladiators will oppose Hammond in the semifinals. Third-seeded Marriotts Ridge takes on the always dangerous La Plata Warriors (No. 2) from Charles County.

Winters Mill happens to reside in the state’s most lethal division, the 2A West. Damascus, who has won the last five 4A/3A state dual titles, and Middletown (Frederick County), 2A/1A state champions the last two years are the top two seeds.

The Falcons come in as the fourth seed and get the honor of opening against the Swarmin’ Hornets from Montgomery County.

Northeast from Cecil County is the only local representative in the 2A East, and they will take on the No. 2 seed, Queen Annes, in the semis at North Caroline.

Bel Air is the No. 1 seed in the 3A North. The Bobcats will square off with Franklin, while the No. 2 seed, Lansdowne, clashes with C. Milton Wright (3rd seed).

Manchester Valley will travel to Frederick County’s Tuscarora High School where they are the No. 3 seed in the 3A West. The Mavericks get the second-seeded Linagnore Lancers in their semifinal.

Mount Hebron (the two seed) and Atholton (4th seed) will make the long trek to the Eastern Shore’s Stephen Decatur High School. Mount Hebron battles No. 3 James M Bennett in one semifinal, while The Raiders get the No. 1 Seahawks.

Another team in for a long haul is Baltimore City’s Poly. The Engineers (the No. 2 seed in the 3A South) take on Great Mills at Huntingtown in Calvert County.

Traveling is also the theme for the local teams in the 4A division. Baltimore City’s third postseason qualifier, Mervo (4th seed), travels to Frederick County for an encounter with top-seeded Urbana.

Old Mill (2nd seed) and South River (3rd seed) will head to St. Mary’s County’s Leonardtown to reignite their rivalry in the 3A East semifinals. Old Mill downed South River, 38-30, in January.
