Raiders, Severn and Gilman enter; Dunbar slides into Top 10

After a successful run in the first half of decade, Atholton High football has gone through some trying times the past couple of seasons. But the Howard County school appears reborn, earning a spot in this week’s VSN Football Top 20.

The 15th-ranked Raiders (5-1) headline three newcomers to the poll. The Columbia school, under second-year coach Justin Carey, a former assistant under Kyle Schmitt (won 38 games and a Howard County league title in four seasons before moving on to Archbishop Spalding), is second behind undefeated Howard and River Hill in the HoCo league.

A pair of MIAA programs, Gilman School and Severn School, also debut. The undefeated Admirals sit atop the MIAA B with No. 18 Boys’ Latin School while Gilman surprised then-No. 8 Calvert Hall College last weekend after taking then-No. 3 Mount St. Joseph to the wire the previous week.

The Top 5 remains intact with St. Frances Academy at No. 1, followed by McDonogh School, Broadneck, Archbishop Spalding and Franklin.
