Cardinals overpower Dundalk to move to 2-0

No. 10 Calvert Hall improved to 2-0 in 2017 with their second straight home gridiron blowout, Saturday night, routing visiting Dundalk, 42-7, with all of the scoring taking place in the first half.

The action started quickly for the Cardinals as Dundalk muffed the opening kickoff and Tariq Fields dove on the loose ball to setup Calvert Hall up deep in the Owls’ territory, just seconds into the contest.

Moments later, Caleb Biggers scored on a 9-yard run, staking the Cardinals to a 7-0 lead.

Special teams came up big once again for Calvert Hall when Jaden Beckles blocked and recovered a Dundalk punt, in the end zone, for a 14-0 Cardinal lead with 6:10 remaining in the first quarter. Then, the defense got into the act, as Mike Neal intercepted a pass and turned it into a 62-yard pick six.

The second quarter brought more of the same, as Calvert Hall’s Fields scored on a 24-yard run, with 11:07 remaining before intermission, stretching the lead to 28-0.

Dundalk finally got in the end zone, but Cole Hebert responded with a 1-yard touchdown burst for the Cardinals as led, 35-7, with 3:06 left in the first half.

The Cardinals final score was setup by a fumble recovery by Calvert Hall’s Luke Firlie at the Dundalk 25-yard line. Moments later, Mike Campbell threw a 5-yard TD pass to Xavier Gravette.

The entire second half was played under a running clock and the Cardinals defense closed out the victory.
